DAVID HERMAN is Trustees Distinguished Professor of Music and University Organist at the University of Delaware.

Notes on Effigies: Jennifer Margaret Barker, a native of Scotland, earned degrees from Glasgow University, Syracuse University and the University Pennsylvania. She is associate professor of music/composition at the University of Delaware. Effigies was composed for David Herman to perform in January 2007 at London’s Temple Church. The composer writes: “In an age when some question the means by which the Knights Templar pursued their quest, I sought to commemorate their existence and their faith. Consequently, the work contains passages of triumph and passages of spiritual reflection. While composing the work I was constantly drawn to the idea of an inner struggle fought on a daily basis by these knights: a struggle between the role of conqueror and the role of faithful servant. Therefore, it was my quest to incorporate this struggle within the music, creating a somewhat conflicting path.”
