The Font is located within the Communion rail of the Chantry Chapel. It is octagonal and the exterior of its oak doors is carved in designs of fruit, flowers, and cherubs. When opened, it reveals figures of eight young women representing the eight virtues bestowed on a person at Baptism. Each figure depicted holds a symbol representing the virtue. Above is its name written in Latin; below, spelled backwards and without the dignity of a capital letter, is the opposite vice. The Virtues are Chastity with a lily, Temperance with a bit, Fidelity with a cross, Charity with a heart, Hope with an anchor, Prudence with a lock, Justice with scales, and Fortitude with a sword. Above the Font, which was painted by Thomas Watson Ball, is the dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit |
