Theology Update for the Week of December 2

Dear friends in Christ

1. I have good news to pass on: Robert Sacks’s commentary on Job is available online, in many forms. You can find it as a free Nook book at bn.com. It was published over several issues in the journal Interpretation, which has its back issues online and with free access. It began with issue 24/2 (Winter 1997). All back issues of the journal are available here. The first several installments can also be found together here, but the final chapters and commentary are not included. In addition, it appears to be in print from Rowman and Littlefield for about $70!

This is good news because I had feared that nothing remained of his commentary save the typescripts, one of which I purchased long ago at the St John’s College bookstore in Santa Fe. So if you’re interested in going further, now it is possible.

2. The Aquinas class meets this Wednesday, December 4, at 6:30 p.m. in Andrew Hall. Our study is of the language we use for God. One of the questions this week is whether we can use words of God that imply temporal succession. To address this, Aquinas sets forth his theory of relations: a very important matter. When we say God is creator or Lord, we are obviously speaking about relations between God and things or people. Since God does not change, can we really use these words of him in the proper sense? Newcomers are welcome. (Our final class will be December 11.)

3. The Sunday Job class will be repeated Thursday, December 5, at 12:40 p.m. on the 2nd floor. This class meets for 40 minutes. We’ll look at chapters 25-30.

Peace.
