On Sunday, July 13 (and repeated on Thursday, July 17), I will lead a Bible study on the 11th chapter of II Corinthians. This is a breath-taking chapter where Paul lets his rhetoric run on all cylinders. The class meets on Sunday at 10 a.m. on the 5th floor, with the Thursday repeat being at 12:40 p.m. on the 2nd floor.
O Hell! What do we have to learn from thee? Dante, the character, learns much as Virgil takes him down. And Dante, the author, can still affect our lives through a direct reading of his Inferno. In about ten days, on Monday, July 21, to be precise, I will lead a discussion of Inferno cantos 1-17, in Andrew Hall from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m. This will be the first of six monthly seminars on the Divine Comedy, with the future dates being August 18, September 15, October 6, November 17, and December 15. Apart from October 6, each of these dates is the third Monday. Anyone who reads the text for a particular seminar is welcome to attend and participate.
Another future class announcement: There will be a series this fall called “Doctrinal Tuesdays.” On selected Tuesdays, beginning September 16, I will offer a reading class on Aquinas on faith. The good doctor addresses this topic as the first of the virtues he discusses in the Second Part of the Second Part of Summa theologiae (i.e., ST II-II qq 1-7). The text will be provided in class, but is also available online in various places and in print in various translations.
