Theology Update for the Week of March 15

Dear friends in Christ,

This Sunday, March 15, a special class. We will have a panel discussion of “Ash Wednesday,” T. S. Eliot’s poem about turning, repentance, hope, and much more. “Because I cannot hope to turn again” … “Although I cannot hope to turn again.” Father Daniels will be moderating the discussion, and the panelists are Heather Cross, David Daniel, and Kari Gold. The class meets on the 5th floor at 10 o’clock.

There will not be any other classes next week.

On Sunday, March 22, I will speak on Genesis 22, the chapter of the binding of Isaac. “Please, take thy son,” God says. It is awful and awe-full at once. That class will be offered twice: on Sunday at 10am, and the next day, Monday, March 23, at 12:40pm.

On Monday evening, March 23, we’ll have a discussion of Josephine Tey’s Miss Pym Disposes. You still have time to enjoy that smart little mystery. The discussion is from 6:15 to 7:45.

Tuesday, March 24, the Rector’s Christian Doctrine class will meet and take up the sacrament of ordination, in the context of mission and ministry, vocation, gifts, and talents. That will be from 6:30 to 7:30pm.

And looking farther ahead: On Wednesday, April 22, Oxford Professor Nigel Biggar will give the Spring Theology Lecture. In this lecture, “Our Violent World,” Professor Biggar will speak on what the Christian just war tradition is, and how it applies today. The lecture will be in the church at 6:30 p.m., and it is open to the public.

Peace,
Father Austin
