Theology Update for the Week of April 12

Dear friends in Christ,

Happy Easter Saturday!
Classes resume next week:

  • Sunday at 10am, we picked up at Genesis chapter 23. This is the chapter that comes immediately after the binding of Isaac, and what happens? Sarah’s death, and Abraham’s arrangements for her burial. There is much of interest here, both what is said in the text and what is left unsaid.
  • Monday at 12:40pm, on the 2nd floor, I will repeat the Sunday class on Genesis 23. We offer this repeat class for those who work in the area or who want to attend the class but aren’t able to do so on Sunday. The class lasts 40 minutes.
  • Tuesday at 6:30 pm, the Rector’s Christian Doctrine Class resumes. This week we will be meeting on the 5th floor, because of work being done on the windows in Andrew Hall. The topics are two of the sacramental rites of the church, sacramental confession and holy unction (the anointing with oil for healing). Anyone interested is welcome to the class, which lasts one hour.

Then looking ahead:

  • Wednesday, April 22, Oxford Professor Nigel Biggar will give the Spring Theology Lecture: “Our Violent World.” This will be on what the Christian “just war” tradition is, and what it has to say about contemporary situations. Open to the public and followed by a reception, the lecture will be in the church at 6:30 p.m. Professor Biggar’s book, In Defence of War, is available in our bookstore at a special price; if you get the book in advance, you can have it signed at the reception. (Note: the book will not be available for purchase at the reception.)
  • Monday, April 27, I will lead a discussion of Flannery O’Connor’s novel, The Violent Bear It Away. This will be in Andrew Hall from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m.

Peace,
Father Austin
