Theology Update for the Week of May 24

Dear friends in Christ,

On Sunday, May 24, Father Daniels and I looked at how words are “players”–“rounded” characters who can surprise us. This is especially true with the Bible, although it is true of poetry as well, and most pre-modern writers thought it was true of prose. (That’s why they were interested in the history of words, their etymologies, and so forth.) It is fascinating to look at John chapter 9 (the healing of the man born blind) with this in mind. For instance, Jesus sends him to wash in the pool called Siloam. John then gives a translation of the word, “sent.” So Jesus sends the man to the place called sent. Jesus is also, in John, called the one sent from God. That word “sent” is playing a well-rounded role in this text. … Newcomers are welcome to join us every week. We have coffee and tea in the room — the 5th floor of the parish house.

Sunday classes are usually repeated on the following Monday, and there will be classes on June 1, 8, 22, and 29, all at 12:40pm on the 2nd floor.)

And coming soon — a seminar discussion of Mr. Shakespeare’s tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. That will be on Monday, June 1, from 6:15 to 7:45pm in Andrew Hall. If you read the play, you’re welcome to the discussion.

And a happy Memorial Day to you. If you missed Nigel Biggar’s lecture on Christian thinking about war, you can listen to it still here.

Peace,
Father Austin
