Theology Update for the Week of June 7

Dear friends in Christ,

Father Daniels and I continue our class on The Mystery of Reading Scripture today, with “The Text Is a Joke.” This is not to dismiss the text; the point will be that, in a sense, every text is a joke, or has qualities that are like those of jokes; things we can see when we think of the characteristics of jokes. We meet on the 5th floor at 10 o’clock, and you’re welcome to join us.

On Monday at 12:40pm, on the 2nd floor, I will repeat this Sunday class for anyone who wants to come (but particularly thinking of people who can’t be here on Sunday or who work in the area). This class ends at 1:20 p.m.

Looking to July: Hamlet will be discussed at the Good Books & Good Talk seminar on Monday, July 13, at 6:15pm. Anyone who reads the play is welcome to the conversation. Some of us weren’t quite sure why Romeo & Juliet was a tragedy, but with Hamlet it is likely to be much clearer!

On the web:

The Anglican Communion News Service published this article a few days ago: Anglican school in Nigeria more welcoming towards Muslim students. Nigerian Anglicans are in need of our ongoing prayers.

And after our Romeo & Juliet seminar, someone sent me this charming NPR story of volunteers in Verona, Italy, the home of said Romeo and Juliet, who answer by hand, annually, some 6000 letters addressed to Juliet:
Peace,
Father Austin
