Dear friends in Christ,
There seems to be a lot of interest in the 39 Articles of Religion, a classic Anglican formulary from the 16th century. Tomorrow at 10 o’clock in Andrew Hall (on the 3rd floor) I will speak on Articles V and VI, which concern the Holy Spirit and the Holy Scriptures. We welcome visitors every week. Please note: the Sunday class will continue to be in Andrew Hall through the month of August.
On Monday at 12:40pm, for those who can’t be here on Sunday or who prefer a Monday class, I will repeat Sunday’s presentation on Articles V and VI. The Monday class meets on the 2nd floor for 40 minutes.
Also on Monday, August 3: the series of tragic seminars continues with a discussion of “Othello” by Shakespeare. Anyone who has read the text is welcome to the seminar (in Andrew Hall). We meet from 6:15 to 7:45pm.
Special Sunday classes on August 9 and 16:
On Sunday, August 9, at 10 o’clock on the 5th floor, we will have a special panel discussion: Reflections on “Othello” featuring David Daniel, Robert Duvall, and Kari Jenson Gold. And then the following Sunday, August 16, another special discussion: Reflections on “Hamlet” with Heather Cross, David Daniel, and Kari Jenson Gold. You do not need to have read the plays to attend these special Sunday classes.
There will be no Monday classes on August 10 and 17.
Looking ahead:
Starting September 15, a Tuesday evening course on Faith Within Reason. Our text is Herbert McCabe’s book of that title, the last of his books, published posthumously and edited by a friend of our parish, Brian Davies O.P. of Fordham University. McCabe was one of the most creative theologians of the 20th century, who understood Aquinas deeply while writing and speaking in ordinary English prose. I recommend the book highly. For the first session, we’ll discuss the first chapter: “Is Belief Wishful Thinking?” Each week we’ll gather in Andrew Hall, from 6:30 to 7:30pm., from September 15 through October 20 (with a possible session on October 27). But even if you can’t participate in the class, I think you will learn something from the book.
