Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704) was a leading French composer of the Baroque era who served as Master of Music at the Church of St. Louis and as Master of Music at the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. He was highly regarded for his sacred vocal music.
Leçons de Ténèbres is a specifically French musical work which grew from the readings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah during Holy Week. In addition to the setting by Charpentier, there are also similar works by Couperin, Gilles and Delalande. Charpentier demonstrates his ability to touch the hearts of his listeners in these deeply-felt, expressive movements.
