Staged Reading: Renaissance

On Friday, April 8th at 7:00 p.m. Saint Thomas Church will present a staged reading of Renaissance, a new play by Lucky Gold. The conflict between personal freedom and divine authority is set against the backdrop of Renaissance Florence. Father Mead will play Lorenzo de’ Medici, the dying charismatic ruler of Florence. Father Austin is Savonarola, the fire-breathing monk who believes God has sent him to save the city, and Father Daniels is Pico della Mirandola, caught between the two men. Come see your priests and fellow parishioners in this remarkable tale! Tickets are $10.00 and may be purchased at coffee hour from Douglas Robbe or on the night of the performance. All proceeds go to benefit the Organ Fund

Lucky Gold was born and raised in Georgia and first came to New York as part of Edward Albee’s summer workshop for playwrights in Montauk. There, he wrote A Grave Undertaking, which was produced at the O’Neill Foundation, Seattle Rep and McCarter Theatre. Other plays include Sweet Basil (Cincinnati Playhouse), When the Stars Begin to Fall (St. Clement’s), Passover (The American Jewish Theatre), and Malvolio’s Revenge (Primary Stages Reading Series). Gold has written extensively for motion pictures, collaborating with George Romero on Before I Wake, a ghost story, for MGM. He wrote numerous film scripts for Miramax, and was script doctor on Marvin’s Room and Shakespeare in Love. He is co-creator of the PBS American Mystery Series based on the novels of Tony Hillerman, produced by Robert Redford. Gold has written both series and long form for television, including USA Network’s holiday perennial, Stealing Christmas. The recipient of an NEA grant, three Emmys and two WGA Awards, he lives in Manhattan with his wife, daughter and dog.
