This series of Sunday classes is on selected parochial and plain sermons of John Henry Newman. There are eight published volumes of these sermons, given by Newman when he was an Anglican priest (and republished some years ago in a fine one-volume edition by Ignatius Press). We will not do them all! Fr Austin's plan is this: each week to consider one sermon that is connected to our place in the liturgical year.
This week the class turns its attention to a sermon on the Feast of the Presentation (which we celebrate on February 2), entitled “Secrecy and Suddenness of Divine Visitations.” Newman moves from the rather small event of Christ’s Presentation in the Temple (an event hardly noticed) to the suddenness of decisive divine action. It is not required to read the sermon in advance, but for those who wish to do so, this is sermon #10 in the 2nd volume of Parochial and Plain Sermons and it can also be found online here.
