Memorial for Sir George Shearing

Wednesday, March 23, 2011
5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

Join us for a choral Memorial Service for Sir George Shearing, OBE, long-time member of Saint Thomas Church. Sir George, a jazz pianist who played for three US presidents as well as for Queen Elizabeth, died of cardiac arrest on February 14. He was 91 years old.

The Memorial takes the place of Choral Evensong originally scheduled for March 23. Music at the Memorial will be sung by the Saint Thomas Choir of Men & Boys, under the direction of John Scott. A homily will be given by the Rector. Below, you may find the leaflet, which contains all service details. The service will be webcast live, and will also be available on-demand for two months following.

‚ñ∫This week, the Rector speaks of Christian funerals in general, and of the Shearing Memorial in particular, in his weekly audio message. You may listen to it here.

‚ñ∫Donations in Sir George Shearing’s memory may be made to:

‚ñ∫Over the years, the Shearings have made quite an impression on their Saint Thomas family, as made clear on this website, where you may listen to an organ prelude by Sir George on the Choral Evensong webcast for February 20, and where you will find fond memories such as those contained within the Rector’s Chronicle from March 2007.
