SAINT THOMAS TOUR 3 - The Chancel |
||

The chancel contains the stalls for clergy and choir, which are made of richly carved wood. The carvings range from biblical scenes, to events in American religious history, to famous persons. Across the front of the choir stalls are representations of modern inventions and industry, including the automobile, the airplane, and the Brooklyn Bridge. Above the clergy stalls are small carved heads of many of the important figures of World War I; King George V is closest to the altar on the epistle (right) side. Set into the floor at the top of the Chancel Steps is the Canterbury Stone, taken from the wall in Canterbury Cathedral against which St. Thomas à Becket fell when he was martyred in 1170. |
Now turn around and look toward the rear of the Nave ....
