5 - The Chapel of the Resurrection

To the right of the Chancel, behind iron gates, is the Chapel of the Resurrection, with a small reredos by Tabor Sears. The center panel shows the risen Christ with two sleeping soldiers. At the left is an angel and at the right Mary Magdalene, Salome, and Mary, the mother of James. The triptych is surrounded with carved oak incorporating symbols of the Resurrection: the peacock, the phoenix, the pomegranate, the bee, and the butterfly.

This is the funeral chapel of the church, and just inside the gates to the right is the Columbarium.

The Book of Remembrance (right) is kept in this chapel. Its pages, illuminated by hand in the medieval style, record all special gifts and memorials to the church. Shown next to the Book of Remembrance is the Saint Thomas Bible. It was designed for the church by the architect of the church, Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, and Clarence S. Stein. Superimposed on the cover is a frame enclosing four ivory panels which represent Moses with the Decalogue, Solomon with the Temple architects, Saint Thomas at the feet of Christ, and The Descent of the Holy Spirit. The four corners have bosses of topaz, each stone centered in the emblems of the four Evangelists.

To the right of the gate is an 18th century Russian icon of the head of Christ.
