O God of unsearchable wisdom and infinite mercy, thou didst choose a captive warrior, David Oakerhater, to be thy servant, and didst send him to be a missionary to his own people and to execute the office of a deacon among them: Liberate us, who commemorate him today, from bondage to self, and empower us for service to thee and to the neighbors thou hast given us; through Jesus Christ, the captain of our salvation; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

Almighty God, we remember before thee this day the blessed martyrs of New Guinea, who, following the example of their Savior, laid down their lives for their friends; and we pray thee that we, who honor their memory, may imitate their loyalty and faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Generally, one Saturday per month is set aside to commemorate the Blessed Virgin Mary.

O Almighty God, who didst endue with singular grace the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of our Lord: Vouchsafe, we beseech thee, to hallow our bodies in purity, and our souls in humility and love; through the same our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

The parish offices are closed on Labor Day. The Fifth Avenue Church doors are open for the single Eucharist of the day at 12:10pm, and then close shortly after so that our staff may enjoy the holiday.

Almighty God, who hast so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

aka The Martyrs of Memphis

When Yellow Fever struck the city of Memphis, Tennessee in 1878, the death toll quickly grew, and most of the surviving residents fled. But not Constance and her companions. They were sisters, priests and doctors at Saint Mary's Episcopal Cathedral who stayed behind to tend to the sick, the dying and the orphaned. Eventually, all but two of these sustainers and comforters succumbed to the disease themselves. 

In his sermon for the Baptism of Our Lord in January 2011, Fr Spurlock discussed the Martyrs of Memphis in some detail. You may read his sermon here.

We give thee thanks and praise, O God of compassion, for the heroic witness of Constance and her companions, who, in a time of plague and pestilence, were steadfast in their care for the sick and dying, and loved not their own lives, even unto death: Inspire in us a like love and commitment to those in need, following the example of our Savior Jesus Christ; who with thee and the Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, now and for ever. Bishop and Martyr of Carthage
d. September 14, 258 

An orator and teacher of rhetoric, Saint Cyprian wrote many epistles and treatises. In On the Lord’s Prayer, he wrote: “We say ‘Hallowed be thy Name,’ not that we want God to be made holy by our prayers, but because we seek from the Lord that his Name may be made holy in us, . . . so that we who have been made holy in Baptism may persevere in what we have begun to be.”

O Almighty God, who didst give to thy servant Cyprian boldness to confess the Name of our Savior Jesus Christ before the rulers of this world, and courage to die for this faith: Grant that we may always be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in us, and to suffer gladly for the sake of the same our Lord Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The last time Holy Cross Day fell on a Sunday was in 2008, at which time Fr Mead delivered a sermon on the significance of the day.

Roman Catholics recognize Jerome as the patron saint of translators, librarians and encyclopedists, and for good reason. Jerome translated the Bible from the original Hebrew and Greek into Latin, a translation that became known as the Vulgate—and a translation which occasionally shows up in the footnotes of the Rector's sermons (see this one for an example).

But Jerome didn't stop there. For nearly two decades he then wrote commentaries on scripture, making him, like Augustine, highly quotable. (See Jerome's thoughts about Christian leadership and the 153 fish in John 21 in two of the Rector's sermons).
