Worship
Opportunities to Serve
The often complex liturgies at Saint Thomas require a host of volunteers, who are members of the following guilds. Membership in the guilds is at the invitation of the Rector. When undertaken faithfully, each duty is indeed a form of worship, allowing those serving to help create an overall environment given over to the greater glory of God.
The High Altar Acolytes
High Altar Acolytes serve at every choral service. They carry crosses and torches and thuribles in procession, assist the priests during the Eucharist, and help set-up and clean-up the chancel before and after each service.
The Chantry Acolytes
The Chantry Acolytes read the Daily Office during Morning and Evening Prayer, and assist the priest during the Mass which follows.
The Altar Guild
The members of the Altar Guild assist the Clergy by preparing the High Altar, the Chantry Altar and the Resurrection Altar for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. They are also responsible for the proper care and storing of the linen, silver and silks used on these altars.
The Lector Guild
Lectors read the Lesson (usually from the Old Testament) during the 11am service on Sundays and during special weekday services, such as Ash Wednesday.
The Ushers
The ushers distribute the service leaflets, assist in the seating of the congregation, gather the offering, and guide parishioners and guests to and from their pews during the Eucharist.
The Greeters of the Welcome Committee
The Greeters welcome the parishioners and guests at the front doors and help them find what they need in order to prepare themselves for worship.
