Theology Update for the Week of September 29

The Tudor Prayer Books: 1549, 1552, and 1559

On September 29 at 10 a.m., on the fifth floor of the parish house, Fr. Cheng will begin a three-part series on “The Tudor Prayer Books: 1549, 1552, and 1559.” The series will examine the Books of Common Prayer promulgated under Edward VI and Elizabeth I, and, in particular, how these liturgical texts shed light on key theological debates of the English Reformation. This Sunday’s class will focus on the Prayer Book of 1549 and the liturgical contributions of Thomas Cranmer. Next Sunday’s class will focus on the Prayer Book of 1552 and the incorporation of additional Protestant theological principles into that work.

Pilgrims’ Course II

During the five Tuesdays of October, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., we will be offering the Pilgrims’ Course II series. The series is open to parishioners who were confirmed or received at Saint Thomas Church since 2015. Topics to be covered include eucharistic practices, daily office and daily prayer, church structure and governance, vocation, and spiritual practices. We will be using the text Walk in Love: Episcopal Beliefs and Practices, by Scott Gunn and Melody Wilson Shoba, which is available for purchase in the bookstore. To sign up for the series, please email Fr. Cheng.

Friday Bible Study

All are welcome to join the parish’s Friday lunchtime Bible Study. The class runs for an hour in the parish house living room following the 12:10 p.m. Mass. Under Fr. Ryan Bennett’s guidance, the class is currently studying the Book of Acts, including an in-depth exploration of the text as a group.
