EVENING PRAYER AND MEDITATION

Thursdays at 6:30pm on Zoom

Saint Thomas Church has begun a regular 6:30pm Thursday service of Evening Prayer and Meditation that you can join online, led by Fr. Adam Spencer, Associate for Pastoral Care, and Sr. Promise Atelon, Deacon and Seminarian. This service will take place over the Zoom platform.

We first pray Evening Prayer from the Book of Common Prayer (1928).  The daily cycle of Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer is called The Daily Office. The texts for both offices are outlined near the beginning of the Book of Common Prayer.

Each week we will follow this sequence for Evening Prayer: (1) opening sentence and responses, (2) one or more psalms appointed for the day, (3) a lesson appointed for the day, (4) the Magnificat, (5) the Apostles’ Creed, (6) more responses and the Lord’s Prayer, (7) the Collect of the Day, a Collect for Peace and a Collect for Aid against Perils, (8) the Prayer of Saint Chrysostom and (9) the grace (2 Cor. 13:14).

Evening Prayer is followed by a time of silent, guided prayer and meditation led, alternatively, by Father Spencer and Sister Promise.

“The soul’s center is God,” Saint John of the Cross wrote.  In the stresses and distractions of life, this period of silence is an opportunity to re-center our souls in God.  We will use multiple approaches to cultivating inner stillness and recollection including centering prayer and Ignatian contemplation.

Please join us for this weekly time of peace and prayer together.  Contact Father Spencer for more information.
