Theology Update for the Week of June 21, 2020

Dear Friends in Christ,

As you may know, we have been encouraging the viewers of our online masses to make an Act of Spiritual Communion by saying the following prayer as the celebrant receives communion:

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

Recently, the blog of the Living Church Foundation published an interesting theological reflection on the practice of spiritual communion: “Spiritual Communion and Eucharistic Ecclesiology.”

The article notes that “just as every Eucharist anticipates and elicits longing for the wedding supper of the Lamb, so spiritual Communion anticipates and elicits desire for fuller sacramental Communion within the ecclesial gathering.”

I commend this article to all who are interested in the history and theological foundations of spiritual communion.  I look forward to the day when we are able once again to share in the Holy Eucharist together at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue.

Blessings,

Fr. Cheng

Theologian in Residence
