We are delighted to announce that the Reverend Dr. Kara Slade, Associate Rector of Trinity Church in Princeton and Canon Theologian of the Diocese of New Jersey, will be delivering Saint Thomas Church’s 2022 Fall Theology Lecture. The lecture will be held from 6:30 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 on the Fifth Floor of the Parish House and via Zoom (see login information below). This lecture will take place immediately after Tuesday’s Choral Evensong, and will conclude with a short reception in the Parish House Living Room.
This lecture, entitled “Christ the Center of Time,” is based on Dr. Slade’s recent book “The Fullness of Time: Jesus Christ, Science, and Modernity,” published by Wipf and Stock. To introduce the lecture, Dr. Slade writes: “Human existence in time is determined by the time of Jesus Christ – by the logic of the incarnation, passion, resurrection, and ascension. However, the predominant accounts of time in the modern West have proceeded from a very different basis. Enmeshed in the ideology of scientific and social progress, these approaches have been marked by a series of moral errors that demonstrate what historian Jenny Reardon calls one of the key features of modernity: ‘the entanglement of rules that govern what can count as knowledge with rules that determine which human lives can be lived.’ In short, the logic of scientific modernity has features that make time a stage for agonism and violence instead of love and redemption. In this lecture, I will present some arguments toward a Christ-centered way of understanding and living in time.”
The Reverend Dr. Slade holds a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering and materials science and a Ph.D. in theology, both from Duke University. Her research interests include Karl Barth, Søren Kierkegaard, the relationship between science and theology, and the ethics of technology. Before becoming a priest, she served in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as a research engineer and test manager for a variety of civilian and military projects. Before coming to Trinity, Kara served on the staff of the Anglican Episcopal House of Studies at Duke Divinity School, as well as in suburban and rural parishes in North Carolina and Alabama. An avid hiker and Duke sports fan, she lives in downtown Princeton with her elderly rescue poodle, Deacon.
To prepare for the lecture, you may order Dr. Slade’s recent book, The Fullness of Time: Jesus Christ, Science, and Modernity.
