Lenten Movie Night Concludes! Children of the Light (2014), directed by Dawn Engle

Friday evenings in Lent, join us for Lenten Movie Nights! Following a vegetarian meal (for those abstaining from meat on Fridays), we’ll engage with a curated series of films both classic and contemporary, exploring together the following questions: where do we find grace in these films? How does it work? In what ways do these films’ visions of God and of what it means to be human challenge, complicate, or clarify our own vision?

This movie group, led by Fr. Mark Schultz, meets on Friday evenings in Lent. The evening begins with a meal at 6pm followed by that week’s film at 6:30pm, with a discussion afterward.

Our sixth and final film of the series is Children of the Light (2014), a documentary on the life of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, directed by Dawn Engle. The film is the first to tell Archbishop Tutu’s story. Including commentary from the Archbishop himself, as well as archival footage, the film reveals how Desmond Tutu’s life and ministry fit within the larger historical context of apartheid and South African history…and how, as an agent of grace, he was able to contribute to the transformation of that history and an end to apartheid oppression. A fitting end to our series, Children of the Light pitches us into Holy Week by inviting us to ask: where might we find ourselves complicit with structures of sin and oppression, and how might grace be calling us to take up our cross and follow Christ in a life of ministry illuminated with the Resurrection Light and Life?
