Shrouded in mysterious circumstances, and completed by his student after the composer’s death, Mozart’s Requiem, performed in the S√ºssmayr completion, retains the master’s genius and is one of his most beloved compositions.

As with many of his Masses, Haydn’s Missa in Angustiis (‘mass for times of distress’), the so-called Nelson Mass’ was given both its names sometime after completion. On the original manuscript, no title appears, simply, ‘In nomine Domini’ at the beginning and ‘Laus Deo’ at the conclusion. In this case, the name ‘Nelson Mass’ was attached some seven years later. Written in the same decade as Mozart’s Requiem, this work’s moods are much more jubilant and inspiring than its Latin title indicates.
