The First Sunday Of Advent

The First Sunday Of Advent

Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

11:00 a.m.

The Advent Procession begins with the Choir hidden in the Great Stairwell, from which they sing the Mattins Responsory. If you listen to the webcast, the choir will sound as if they are at a great distance, which is appropriate given the prophetic yearning of the look from afar. The Officiant (Fr Mead) then says the Bidding and then leads the congregation in The Confession. After the Collect and the First Lesson, the choir and clergy process into place on the chancel during a hymn.

After the second lesson and the singing of the Benedictus Dominus Deus Israel, the Officiant sings the Versicle and the choir and clergy process to the Chantry Chapel during the singing of a hymn. If you listen on the webcast, you will notice the choir becoming more distant again.

After the reading of a Collect and the singing of a Motet, the choir and clergy process to the back of the nave during the singing of a hymn. Another Collect and Lesson are read, followed by the singing of another Motet.

During Come, thou Redeemer of the earth, the choir and clergy process up the center aisle into place on the chancel, and the Rector greets the congregation and gives a homily. From there, the service is similar to any other Sunday Eucharist at Saint Thomas. Please download the leaflet (below) for additional details.
