The Third Sunday In Lent

The Third Sunday In Lent

Almighty God, who seest that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

11:00 a.m.

Included in this Choral Eucharist are hymns sung by the congregation and choir, additional music sung exclusively by the choir, lessons, prayers, a sermon, and a Rite I Mass. All baptized Christians are welcome to receive Holy Communion. Details of the service may be seen in the leaflet, which is posted at the bottom of this page, where you will also find links to the webcast during and after the service.

Music notes: Faur√©’s Messe Basse has an even more complicated history than his celebrated Requiem. It was undertaken in 1881 as a joint endeavor by Faur√© and Andr√© Messager, whose two contributions (Kyrie and O Salutaris) were later discarded for a newly reworked group of movements. Scored for three-part treble choir accompanied by harmonium and solo violin, Faur√© and Messager later orchestrated the Messe. The music of the final version, completed 25 years later, is entirely Faur√©’s, and incorporates a new Kyrie and a reworked Benedictus, based on the now-abandoned Gloria. The music is characteristically Faur√©’s – melodious, simple, and charming.
