The Second Sunday In Lent

The Second Sunday In Lent

O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from thy ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of thy Word, Jesus Christ thy Son; who with thee and the Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

4:00 p.m.

Above: The altar in the Resurrection Chapel of Saint Thomas Church. For Christians, the resurrection changes everything, including when we mark the Lord’s Day. This evening Fr Austin preaches the fifth sermon in the Commandments as Good News series, on “Keep Holy the Sabbath.”

About Choral Evensong: Based on the services held daily in the medieval Church, Choral Evensong as arranged in the Book of Common Prayer of the Anglican Church has been sung regularly since the Sixteenth Century. Many people who are new to worship at Saint Thomas prefer to come to Choral Evensong because it is relatively contemplative. The service includes readings (just as would occur at Evening Prayer) and prayers led by a priest. An anthem as well as a setting of the Magnificat and the Nunc dimittis are sung by the choir. Read more about Choral Evensong here, or view the Choral Evensong Service Card posted a few days prior to this service to the bottom of this page, where links to the webcast are posted during and after the service.

‚ñ∫There is no Mass following Choral Evensong on Sundays. If you would like to make your Holy Communion for the week, consider attending one of the morning Eucharists, or else at any of the other sixteen masses at Saint Thomas later this week.

‚ñ∫Lenten practices: In his Ash Wednesday sermon, Fr Mead spoke about the three traditional lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Consider worshiping with us on weekdays in Lent, or making your confession (which the Rector spoke about his weekly audio message for the week beginning Feb 17), or meditating each day on the word of God and reflections on the word of God.

‚ñ∫We are nearing the end of the Candlemas Campaign of the 2013 Every Member Canvass. For those who have not yet pledged to the 2013 EMC and would like to be recognized as active supporters of Saint Thomas Church and Choir School, the Candlemas Campaign offers a chance to do just that. Feel free to email Ann Hall Kaplan if you have any questions. Thank you to everyone who has already pledged, and thank you for considering making one if you haven’t yet. You may pledge online here.
