The Presentation of our Lord Jesus Christ (Candlemas)

The Presentation of our Lord Jesus Christ (Candlemas)

Almighty and everliving God, we humbly beseech thee that, as thy only-begotten Son was this day presented in the temple, so we may be presented unto thee with pure and clean hearts by the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

5:30 p.m.

Above: The Presentation Scene from the Incarnation Window of Saint Thomas Church. The aged Simeon stands at right, holding the Child in his arms. At left, the Virgin kneels with hands outstretched, ready to receive him back. Joseph stands behind her, holding the cage in which he has brought his offering of two doves.

Join us for this 45 minute choral service, which is similar in terms of the order of service to the 9am Sunday Sung Eucharist, except that in this case the full choir sings.

Today’s Eucharist commerates The Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord Jesus Christ at the Temple, which used to be called The Feast of the Purification of Mary. Because the event includes the aged Simeon speaking the Nunc dimittis, and in so doing describes the Child as a light to lighten the gentiles, the feast is also commonly and charmingly called Candlemas.

‚ñ∫The Sunday morning adult education class is making its way through some of the sermons of Henry Newman. This past Sunday they read Newman’s take on the Presentation.
