John Coleridge Patteson And His Companions

John Coleridge Patteson And His Companions

Almighty God, who called your faithful servant John Coleridge Patteson and his companions to witness to the gospel, and by their labors and sufferings raised up a people for your own possession: Pour out your Holy Spirit upon your church in every land, that, by the service and sacrifice of many, your holy Name may be glorified and your kingdom enlarged; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Eve of the Feast of Saint Matthew

Given that it is September 20, we remembered John Coleridge Patteson and his companions at services earlier today in the Chantry Chapel. Since tomorrow is a major feast day, this evening we anticipate The Feast of Saint Matthew with a special Festal Evensong. All of tomorrow’s Saint Matthew services are in the Chantry Chapel.

About Evensong: Based on the services held daily in the medieval Church, Choral Evensong as arranged in the Book of Common Prayer of the Anglican Church has been sung regularly since the Sixteenth Century. Many people who are new to worship at Saint Thomas prefer to come to Choral Evensong because it is relatively contemplative. The service includes readings (just as would occur at Evening Prayer) and prayers led by a priest. An anthem as well as a setting of the Magnificat and the Nunc dimittis are sung by the choir. Read more about Choral Evensong here, or view the Choral Evensong Service Card posted to the bottom of this page, where links to the webcast will be posted during and after the service. ‚ñ∫There is a brief Mass following Festal Evensong. All baptized Christians are welcome to stay on to make their Holy Communion.
