Tuesday In Holy Week

O God, by the passion of thy blessed Son didst make an instrument of shameful death to be unto us the means of life: Grant us so to glory in the cross of Christ, that we may gladly suffer shame and loss for the sake of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

François Couperin was born in 1668 in Paris, where he lived and worked for most of his life, and where he became one of the central musical personalities both within the court of Louis XIV and beyond. He was the most talented of an illustrious French musical dynasty whose sphere of activity embraced above all the church.

Amongst Couperin’s most beautiful sacred compositions are his three Le√ßons de T√©n√®bres composed around 1713-15, perhaps for the convent of Longchamp. Only three of the original nine sections from the Lamentations of Jeremiah survive today. Setting the first two lessons as solos allowed Couperin to give each soprano a dazzling display of virtuosity, while the duet setting of the third and final section reaches a higher level of dramatic intensity, brimming with dissonant suspensions and expressive fervor.
