The Day of Pentecost
Almighty God, who on this day didst open the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of thy Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the same Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Leaving Sunday
This year, the Day of Pentecost falls on the same date as “Leaving Sunday,” the last Sunday the Class of 2011 is with us as part of the Saint Thomas Choir School (Commencement and Prize Day Ceremonies were on Saturday, June 11).
Because it is the Day of Pentecost, propers correspond accordingly and the Solemn Eucharist proceeds in a manner appropriate for such a big day, beginning with the Opening Acclamation followed by a long procession of two hymns, during which the choir and clergy wind through the pews, led by a thurifer. There is incense also at the Gloria, the Gospel Procession and the Offertory.
So, in all ways the service proceeds as a celebration of the Day of Pentecost. However, the service ends rather unusually, and it is at this point that it becomes apparent that this day is also Leaving Sunday. After the Post-Communion Prayer, the graduates approach the High Altar rail for a blessing and to receive their crosses, a simple yet powerful ceremony which occurs as the choir sings the sublime Ubi caritas.

The Sermon today is given by The Very Rev’d John Hall, Dean of Westminster, England. He also delivered the address at Saturday’s Commencement Ceremony at the church. He’s actually been quite busy of late. You might remember Dean Hall from that little wedding over in London in April.
