Trinity Sunday

Trinity Sunday

Almighty and everlasting God, who hast given unto us thy servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of thy Divine Majesty to worship the Unity: We beseech thee that thou wouldest keep us steadfast in this faith and worship, and bring us at last to see thee in thy one and eternal glory, O Father; who with the Son and the Holy Spirit livest and reignest, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

This series looks at the ways in which the Hebrew scriptures are interpreted within the texts of the New Testament.

Esau in the New Testament. In this session, we look at the way in which Esau, son of Isaac and twin brother of Jacob, is depicted in the epistles to the Romans and to the Hebrews. Esau, and his descendants the Edomites, are major figures in the Old Testament; from Esau originally being a single character in a longer story, the Edomites become the generic symbol of all enemies of Israel. That being the case, Paul’s references to Esau would have been shocking to his readers, a rhetorical tour de force in his emphasis on salvation by grace through faith.
