The Second Sunday In Lent

The Second Sunday In Lent

O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from thy ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of thy Word, Jesus Christ thy Son; who with thee and the Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

10:00 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.

At the Sunday class from February 6 until Lent begins in March, Fr Austin will give short talks on The Bible, the Church, and Authority. These talks will be on questions concerning the Bible such as: What books are in it? What is the history of its acceptance as a “canon”? What is its relationship to the church? What makes it authoritative?

There is a remarkably clear short book by Professor Joseph Lienhard of Fordham of that title which participants might want to read in parallel to the class, but Fr Austin will not be expecting that anyone has read that book

In today’s class, Fr Austin will start with the question, is the New Testament canon fixed? Could we include a new letter of Paul’s, if one were to be found and were clearly by him? This leads to the question of the authority of the canon of 27 books in the New Testament: is it authoritative? And if so, on what grounds? Joseph Lienhard in his book The Bible, the Church, and Authority nicely lays out the theological options with representative views, and then argues for the ‚Äúrule of faith‚Äù as the authoritative measure. It’s fascinating material. Please join us.
