Almighty God, whose blessed Son restored Mary Magdalene to health of body and mind, and called her to be a witness of his resurrection: Mercifully grant that by thy grace we may be healed of all our infirmities and know thee in the power of his endless life; who with thee and the Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, now and for ever. Beginning June 10 and extending on Sunday mornings throughout the summer, Fr Austin guides us through the First and Second Books of Samuel. Fr Austin recommends Robert Alter’s The David Story, which is a translation with commentary by that notable literary scholar. He also recommends a commentary by Francesca Aran Murphy on First Samuel in the Brazos series of theological commentaries. However, you don’t need to read either book to enjoy the class. Bibles are provided. Simply show up for any or all class sessions.
Today’s class is on 1 Samuel chapter 13-15, wherein Saul comes into his kingship, Jonathan his son appears as a victorious warrior, and Saul disobeys the Lord’s word given through Samuel. You are welcome to join us as our summer with Samuel continues: 10 a.m., on the 5th floor of the parish house.
