The Annunciation

We beseech thee, O Lord, pour thy grace into our hearts, that we who have known the incarnation of thy Son Jesus Christ, announced by an angel to the Virgin Mary, may by his cross and passion be brought unto the glory of his resurrection; who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

This series of Sunday classes is on selected parochial and plain sermons of John Henry Newman. There are eight published volumes of these sermons, given by Newman when he was an Anglican priest (and republished some years ago in a fine one-volume edition by Ignatius Press). We will not do them all! Fr Austin’s plan is this: each week to consider one sermon that is connected to our place in the liturgical year.

This week we look at one of Newman’s sermons on Saint Mary: “The Reverence Due the Blessed Virgin Mary.” This is sermon 12 in volume 2 of “Parochial and Plain Sermons,” and if you want to read it in advance, you can find it here. March 25, of course, is the customary date for the Annunciation (nine months until Christmas!), but this year we celebrate it on March 27 since March 25 falls on the Fifth Sunday in Lent.
