Theology Class - The Mystery of Reading Scripture

Sunday, June 21, 2015
The Fourth Sunday After Pentecost
10:00 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.

Sundays, May 10 through June 14, at 10am on the 5th floor

(repeated on Mondays, May 11, May 18, June 1, and June 8 – no classes May 25 or June 15 – at 12:40 p.m. on the 2nd floor)

There are many different ways of reading Scripture, and many different ways of thinking about the reading of Scripture, but all of them fall short of what really happens when we encounter the Word of God written.

Over these six weeks, Father Austin and Father Daniels will look at some of the principal alternatives, using as their ‚Äúdialogue partner‚Äù Peter Leithart’s book, Deep Exegesis.

• Is the text of the Bible merely a “husk” that contains the true “meaning”? If so, can we then extract the meaning and put it into words of our own preference?
• When we read the Bible, is that an “event”? And if so, does the biblical text have any fixed meaning?
• Are the words of Scripture “players” in a semantic game?
• Are the words of Scripture a “joke”—and is the joke on us?
• Are the words of Scripture something like “music”?
• Is everything in the Bible really about Christ? Is the point of the Bible its application to our lives?

Visitors are welcome to any or all of these classes. Leithart’s book will be available in the bookstore, for those who would like to read further.
