What is the Sacrament of Marriage?

The Book of Common Prayer speaks of the union of spouses “in heart, body, and mind” as “intended by God for their mutual joy; for the help and comfort given one another in prosperity and adversity” and for the nurture of children in the knowledge and love of the Lord if it is God’s will. The union of two people in love is an image of God’s own being: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, made one by their one being of love, a profound unity in diversity. In Marriage, a couple becomes a window onto the being of God; in Marriage, a couple receives the grace to become a site of the inbreaking into the world of God’s life of love which is transforming and renewing all things. The grace the couple receives also empowers them to face difficulty and adversity together, to rejoice together, to share their lives with each other in ways that give life (God’s own life) to those around them. Marriage is a presencing in a couple of God’s relationship with all of creation recapitulated in his relationship with the church, God’s spouse, and whose marriage feast is the consummation of all things in the oneness of perfect love.
