On May 14, 2022, an 18-year-old, avowed white supremacist drove 200 miles from his hometown in upstate New York to Tops supermarket in the city of Buffalo with the express purpose of killing African Americans. The gunman took the lives of ten men and women, who ranged in age from 32 to 86. As one of the worst racism-motivated attacks in recent years, the murders shocked New York State and the nation.
The Buffalo 5/14 Survivors Fund, which is part of the Virginia-based National Compassion Fund, was established to receive donations to support those who have been affected by this massacre. Though the area where the survivors reside falls outside of our diocese, the Grants Committee agreed to provide support to the Buffalo 5/14 Survivors Fund. We are grateful to the Saint Thomas Church Vestry for its approval of this grant.
