One of the wonderful things about summer holidays, is the contrast in regular and new seasonal activities, (and even the weather), as well as having time to catch up with family and friends.
One of the joys I always find in visiting Yorkshire (Fr. Turner’s home county) is the contrast between the cities, coast and countryside; a countryside which in turn varies greatly. Whether visiting the Dales, the Moors or the Wolds, there are multiple beautiful sights to enjoy, many of which have been made famous by TV series, filmmakers and artists alike.
One such contemporary artist is David Hockney. Hockney is an important contributor to the pop art movement of the 1960s, and is considered to be one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century, with worldwide exhibitions displaying both oil and digitally created paintings, depicting the countryside of East Yorkshire.
His first work in stained glass (see picture below) can be seen at Westminster Abbey. It was commissioned to celebrate the reign of Her Majesty The Queen and depicts a vividly colored country scene reflecting The Queen’s deep affection and connection to the countryside.
We continue to pray that you will all be safe and happy this summer, and enjoy your school holidays to the full!
