Sharp Faith (Week 29): Do Christians have to believe in The Resurrection? - Sunday Theology Talks

Sunday, April 28, 2024 at 10am

Our Theologian in Residence, the Rev. Dr. Luigi Gioia, continues a year-long course to dive into all the main areas of theology: Faith, Scripture, Tradition, God, Christ, Salvation, the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, and the Church – always with an eye to their relevance for spirituality and for everyday life.

The resurrection is something we will never be able to understand, just as we can never stare at the sun. We can make sense of somebody coming back from the dead but Jesus’ resurrection is much more than this. It is experienced in the form of an empty tomb, that is of an absence, a riddle that leaves us puzzled and confused. Faith in the resurrection requires narrative, interpretation, explanation, listening, questioning, doubting. However it does not come as the mere logical conclusion of an argument. It takes facts into consideration, is accompanied by feelings, but neither are decisive. It needs a catalyst, something that all of a sudden gives a coherent shape to all the scattered and previously disjointed pieces of the puzzle. We shall see that for us as for the disciples at Emmaus this catalyst is the breaking of bread of our Eucharistic celebrations.

The Adult Education program at Saint Thomas Church offers sound Christian teaching presented with intellectual vigor, teaching that is grounded in Holy Scripture, mediated by the catholic tradition that is the inheritance of Anglicanism and set forth in the Book of Common Prayer.
