Dear friends in Christ
Next week we will come to the end of the Song of Songs, with the class on Sunday at 10 am (5th floor), repeated Thursday at 12:40 p.m. (2nd floor). Chapter 8 of the Song contains a few verses that are often considered the climax of the whole book, and yet the chapter also contains many verses that just seem odds and ends. We will look one last time at the odd fact that, although the Song has established characters, it does not have a discernable plot. Newcomers are welcome at any time.
The Ethical Wednesdays class next week (on October 1) will look at the differences between Anglican and Roman Catholic structures of authority in the church. Differing authority structures lead to differing ways of teaching, and thereby affect what is taught. This is the material covered in Part III of the ARC/USA “Ecclesiology and Moral Discernment,” which you can read here but which you do not need to read in advance in order to participate in the class: in Andrew Hall, 6:30 to 7:30 pm
The following week:
Four Quartets: I will speak about “Burnt Norton” on Sunday, October 5, at 10 am (not to be repeated that Thursday).
Purgatorio: The seminar discussion of cantos 18-end will be on Monday, October 6, from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m.
Doctrinal Tuesdays: We will consider (again) the inner act of faith, i.e. what faith is in the human person, using Aquinas’s Summa theologiae II-II, questions 2 and 3 (but no need to read in advance); 6:30 p.m.
Around town:
Rowan Williams is to receive an honorary doctorate at Fordham University and to deliver the annual Orthodoxy in America lecture on Tuesday, September 30, at 6:30 p.m. in the Bronx; info here:
