Theology Update for the Week of December 13

Dear friends in Christ,

We have, it seems, at least two more sessions on the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion. This Sunday I will start with Article 36, on ministerial ordination. Articles 37-39 are on other matters of authority, particularly civil authority. The Sunday class is at 10 o’clock on the 5th floor; we have coffee & tea in the room.

I will repeat the Sunday class on Monday at 12:40pm on the 2nd floor. We have coffee & tea then also. The Monday class runs to 1:20 p.m.

I announced last week the first two books for our 2016 Good Books & Good Talk seminars. On January 25, we’ll discuss Muriel Spark’s The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Then on February 22 we’ll take up The Unnamed by Joshua Ferris. Both of these books are now in our bookstore. The seminars will be on Mondays, from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m. We do expect participants in the seminars to have read the book of the evening.

Also in our bookstore: a new book by the Rev’d Fleming Rutledge, an Episcopal priest who often attends Saint Thomas, The Crucifixion: Understanding the Death of Jesus Christ. This book is the culmination of many, many years of studying, preaching, and teaching; it comes with the approbation of theologian Robert Jenson (also a friend of our parish). You might like to stop by and have a look at it.

I’ve been tweeting daily this Advent with pictures from my late wife’s Advent calendar. My Twitter handle (if that’s what it’s called) is victorleeaustin. You can follow people on Twitter without tweeting yourself. And speaking of Susan: December 17 will be the 3rd anniversary of her death. I welcome your prayers for her and your thanksgivings. And in case you want to attend it: I’ll be saying the 8am mass that Thursday in the chantry.

Peace,
Father Austin
