Diddy Disciples

The Reverend Sharon Moughtin Mumby

This weekend at Saint Thomas Church we continued to host training events for our own staff and neighboring parishes, with a focus on revisiting old and exploring new ways of nurturing children in faith together.

This included a training day on Saturday learning about Storytelling and Leading Worship using Diddy Disciples, an emerging program which we hope to develop with our youngest children. Read more: www.diddydisciples.org.

At 11am on Sunday, we welcomed the Revd Dr. Sharon Moughtin-Mumby, Old Testament scholar, author and founder of Diddy Disciples, to lead a joint lesson alongside our Nursery and Sunday School team.

The Revd Dr. Sharon Moughtin-Mumby has been involved in education for over twenty years. Beginning with a focus on adult education, she taught, lectured, and examined at the University of Oxford, followed by serving as Old Testament tutor at a Church of England theological college (Ripon College, Cuddesdon).

Collect your own booklet with ideas for observing Lent @ Home when you come on Sunday.

Each family is also invited to take home a Lenten collection box for our parish fundraiser towards “…the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund in Australia, as well as The Church of Santa Cecilia in Guánica and San Juan Apóstol in Yauco, Puerto Rico, both of which sustained damage during earthquakes last December. We will also support the Church of Saint Augustin Maniche in Haiti, which also sustained damage from natural disasters.”

Also in support of this collection, will have a used toy and book sale organized by our Senior Sunday School children.

Last Sunday…

In Sunday School on Sunday, March 1st, we entered the season of Lent together. Instead of singing songs, we listened to soft, “contemplative” music. We wondered together in a Godly Play lesson about Jesus in the Wilderness. We wondered what it could have been like for Jesus to be in the wilderness with nothing to eat for 40 days and 40 nights. We wondered what Jesus and God talked about during that time. We learned about the Tempter and that Jesus kept telling him “No,” and pointed to God and scripture.

And then we wondered about Jesus and prayer. The older children practiced a dramatized reading of Gospel story with Ms. Fiona, and read the story out loud to the rest of us. Mo. Turner lit a single white candle for us while the electric lights were turned low, and provided us with stones for an altar of prayer. We prayed about something or someone we were worried about. We prayed about something or someone who brought us happiness. I wonder what we will explore next Sunday as we travel together further into Lent?

Faithfully yours,
Mother Alison Turner
