Women Artists and Christian Social Justice

Sunday Theology Talk with Dr. Ayla Lepine

Exploring art by modern women reveals a unique interplay between Christian theology and social justice in visual culture produced within a time and context that often marginalised or ignored religion. This discussion will focus on four works of art: the sculptor Edmonia Lewis’ monumental image of Hagar, Corita Kent’s subversive comparison between the Blessed Virgin Mary and Del Monte tomatoes in an American supermarket, the stained glass artist Joan Fulleylove’s engagement with masculinity and war, and Paula Rego’s bold and tender interpretation of the Crucifixion. In each case, the call for liberation and the urgent need for action as the Body of Christ is offered in a radical and unprecedented way. Rather than considering art’s capacity to connect with Christianity, this talk will demonstrate that art itself is a form of theology.

The Adult Education program at Saint Thomas Church offers sound Christian teaching presented with intellectual vigor, teaching that is grounded in Holy Scripture, mediated by the catholic tradition that is the inheritance of Anglicanism and set forth in the Book of Common Prayer.
