Theology Update for the Week of April 27, 2025

Praying with Nelson Mandela

Guest Speaker: The Most Rev. Dr. Thabo Cecil Makgoba
Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town

Dear Friends,

For our Sunday Theology Talk on April 27 at 10 am we have an exceptional guest speaker, the Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, who will also preach at the 11 am mass.

Archbishop Thabo Makgoba is the Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town and the spiritual leader of the Anglican Church of South Africa. Appointed in 2007, he became the youngest person to hold this position. Known for his deep commitment to social justice, reconciliation, and spiritual leadership, Archbishop Makgoba has been a prominent voice in South Africa’s post-apartheid era. He is also an author and public theologian, recognized for his reflections on faith, leadership, and the legacy of figures like Nelson Mandela.

Archbishop Makgoba will share with us his memories and reflections around his meetings with the Nobel Peace Prize activist and former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela.

In 2009, at the request of Graça Machel, Archbishop Thabo Makgoba offered a heartfelt prayer with Nelson Mandela in his home—a moment that marked the beginning of a profound spiritual relationship between the Anglican leader and South Africa’s iconic statesman. The talk explores the depth of that connection, reflecting on the influence Mandela had on the Archbishop’s ministry and the wider church. Through intimate insights into Mandela’s spirituality and his impact on those closest to him, Archbishop Makgoba opens a unique window into the soul of a nation and the spiritual legacy of one of its greatest sons.

The talk will take place at 10 am in the Parish House, Fifth Floor. Coffee will be available from 9:45 am. As always the talk will be streamed live. The YouTube link will be sent to you next Saturday.

All blessings,

Fr. Luigi Gioia
Theologian In Residence
