The Fourth Sunday Of Advent
O Adonai — “O Lord”

The Fourth Sunday Of Advent

We beseech thee, Almighty God, to purify our consciences by thy daily visitation, that when thy Son Jesus Christ cometh he may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Revelation of Saint John the Divine is one of the most peculiar and controversial books of the Bible. Also called by its anglicized Greek name, the Apocalypse, the book’s imagery, language, and claims about heaven, earth, and the relationship between them, have captivated Christians for millennia. This class will look closely at the book, guided by several recent Anglican commentaries.

Demonic forces on Sunday. The study of the Revelation of Saint John the Divine begins a new and much darker section of the book. The twelfth and thirteenth chapters introduce the reader to the dragon–“that old serpent, called the Devil” who wages war on the woman “clothed with the sun”–as well as two notorious beasts. Even with them present, however, there is never a question of the ultimate victory of the Lamb of God.
