Benjamin Sheen, Associate Organist from 2012-2019

Holy Week, from Palm Sunday to the Easter Vigil, is the heart of the Christian year; music plays a central role during this most sacred time. Through compositions inspired by the celebration of Christ’s Passion, death, and resurrection, we “traverse the mystery, anguish, and joy” of these significant events.

Organist Benjamin Sheen reflects that emotional and religious journey of Holy Week in a program surveying the spiritual and theological influences of the music of J.S. Bach on three of the nineteenth century’s greatest composers. Mendelssohn, Brahms and Schumann were all fascinated by Bach, and many of the latter’s works provided compositional models for the three leading exponents of what became the Bach Revival after 1829.
