The Thirteenth Sunday After Pentecost

The Thirteenth Sunday After Pentecost

Grant, we beseech thee, merciful God, that thy Church, being gathered together in unity by thy Holy Spirit, may manifest thy power among all peoples, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen. (Proper 16)

Above: Our Lady of Fifth Avenue, depicting Mary and Jesus, was rendered in bronze in 1987 by Mother Concordia Scott of the Benedictine Order at Minster Abbey, Ken, England. It is similar to an earlier work by her at Canterbury Cathedral. The statue was given in honor of the Reverend Canon John Andrew’s fifteenth anniversary as rector. Now the Rector Emeritus, Canon Andrew gives the sermon today.

The 11am Eucharist is “Festal” because we celebrate today the blessed mother, Saint Mary the Virgin. Her feast day is actually August 15, and we kept the day with three said masses in the Chantry Chapel on that day. That said, we’re also celebrating the feast today so that the maximum number of people can participate, and so that we can enjoy music dedicated to our Lady.

Included in today’s worship are hymns sung by the congregation and choir, additional music sung exclusively by the choir, lessons, prayers, a sermon, and a Rite I Mass. All baptized Christians are welcome to receive Holy Communion. Details of the service may be seen in the leaflet, which is posted at the bottom of this page.
