O Lord, preserve in the midst of your people the spirit with which you filled the Bishop Saint Charles Borromeo, that your Church may be constantly renewed and, by conforming herself to the likeness of Christ, may show his face to the world. The Cornelius Roosevelt Duffie Guild and the T. Tertius Noble Guild invite you to a special lecture by Dr. John Scott about T. Tertius Noble (pictured) ‚Äì his life and his contributions to the Choir School and Saint Thomas Church. This event will be held in Andrew Hall and start at 6:30 pm. If you plan to come, please email Ann Hall Kaplan by noon on Monday, October 31.

From Canon Wright’s parish history of Saint Thomas:

[After the resignation of Mr. William Macfarlane as organist and choirmaster in 1912,] the Vestry then cast about for a suitable successor. At this time T. Tertius Noble, the acclaimed organist of York Minster and already an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Organists, was in the United States for a series of organ recitals. The vestry made contact with him, and invited him to become organist of Saint Thomas. He accepted, and arrived to take up his duties in May of 1913. In his acceptance letter, Dr. Noble pledged to do “everything in my power to make the service of the Church as devotional and beautiful as possible.” He trusted that “all will help me in my work to stamp out anything which is not worthy of such a beautiful place of worship.”
