“I know, dear Mr. Clement, that there are many ways we prefer to look at things. But one must actually take facts as they are, must one not?‚Äù

Pity the vicar who has to endure such remarks from the aging spinsters in St. Mary Mead, particularly when he is busy trying to determine who shot Colonel Protheroe, his insufferable church warden, while the man was seated at the vicar’s very own desk. But perhaps the narrator of Murder at the Vicarage is more fortunate than he at first imagines, for the interfering spinster is one Jane Marple, and this novel is her debut.

All murder mysteries hinge on discovery of the truth, and their resolutions bring justice and restore order to a community thrown out-of-whack by crime. This novel takes place in a classic English village, the murder occurs in the vicarage, and the vicar serves as our narrator as we watch to see who will uncover the truth first—the professional, rational men (vicar, police, doctor, et al) or the amateur, gossipy women (Miss Marple et al). As with all good fiction, the characters are recognizable. Classic Christie, classic mystery, classic English parish life.
