Our Theologian in Residence, the Rev. Dr. Luigi Gioia, continues a year-long course to dive into all the main areas of theology: Faith, Scripture, Tradition, God, Christ, Salvation, the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, and the Church – always with an eye to their relevance for spirituality and for everyday life.

In Christian tradition and spirituality there have been two main ways of approaching the action of the Holy Spirit in our lives and in history. One way stresses direct inspiration, immediate revelation, certain and infallible knowledge, often accompanied by extraordinary physical manifestations. The other way prefers to discern how the Spirit works gradually, in and through the usual fully human and fully fallible, often messy and conflict-ridden public processes of give and take in ordinary life. The first model has generated constant waves of ‘renewals’ especially over the past three centuries. The second model is operative in the way more established churches tend to function. Behind this bifurcation there is the question of the ‘experience of God’. Interestingly, this question has an impact on the relation between faith and empirical sciences (that is sciences based on experience and experiments).

The Adult Education program at Saint Thomas Church offers sound Christian teaching presented with intellectual vigor, teaching that is grounded in Holy Scripture, mediated by the catholic tradition that is the inheritance of Anglicanism and set forth in the Book of Common Prayer. For more information about our theology program and to receive links for weekly Sunday Theology Talks, please contact Fr. Gioia.
